O'Grady's father was Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. Her birthplace was in Detroit in Michigan. She was the child of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. Before moving to Los Angeles, she appeared in a variety of commercials. O'Grady started her career by modeling for Montgomery Ward and making commercials. She first appeared on screen in 1988, in the romantic comedy she's Having a Baby. She was then cast as the main character in ABC Drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. She also guest starred on several other shows, and was a part of made for TV and independent films. Donna Abandando, her first major role in the ABC cop comedy NYPD Blue was the character she played. O'Grady's role as the tall and blonde team secretary performed from 1993 to 1996. In each of those years she won the Emmy Award in the category for Outstanding Supporting Performance by the Drama Series. In addition to the her castmates, she was awarded the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Performance by an Ensemble in an Drama Series in the year 1995.
