O'Neil tried out for her third series of Canadian Idol in the early stages of 2005 when she was still at high school. She advanced to the 100th round since the judges were impressed with her performance. O'Neil was given high marks by the jury. She suffered significant defeats during the Top 10 week and Top 9 week of the finals. She ended up in the bottom three, as well as the in the bottom two. The judges were surprised at her performance and suggested viewers choose singers who were well-known and had a strong voice, like Melissa. O'Neil did not make it to the top 3 after a series of consistently outstanding performance. Her two additional performances on September 7,2005, in which O'Neil made it to the top two spots in the contest. Werner predicted that the morning the newspapers would be reporting O'Neil's triumph over Rex Goudie and become the 3rd Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil received a rousing ovation from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
